Month of Miyazaki![]() I hereby declare July 2015 to be the Month of Miyazaki here on DBZF. Thought it would be a good and fun group activity to watch all of his work and discuss/analyze. Hayao Miyazaki truly is one of the best filmmakers of all time and should be celebrated as such. I believe seeing Miyazaki films is very important, not just for anime fans, but fans of film in general. My hope is that by the end of the month, people unfamiliar with his work will become so and that current fans will further understand his films (Specifically, his Studio Ghibli films) The List: ![]() Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind ![]() Castle in the Sky ![]() My Neighbor Totoro ![]() Kiki's Delivery Service ![]() Porco Rosso ![]() Princess Mononoke ![]() Spirited Away ![]() Howl's Moving Castle ![]() Ponyo ![]() The Wind Rises The Discussion: I would like to start with everyone interested in participating by ranking their favorite Miyazaki movie's the best that they can. Would be interesting to see how everyone's list looks at the end of the month compared to now. My Top 5 (like pulling teeth): 1. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 2. Princess Mononoke 3. Spirited Away 4. My Neighbor Totoro 5. Howl's Moving Castle Why do you personally enjoy his films? If you're new, what do you think of Miyazaki's films based on what you've heard? I WILL CONTINUALLY UPDATE THIS THREAD THROUGH THE MONTH I am even changing my Cowboy Bebop (for once) avatar and signature Miyazaki themed for this month. To close: I just felt I needed to include this clip from the end of the Studio Ghibli documentary called The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness. I had a strong emotional response to it. Unless I've watched some when I was younger I only recently watched Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle because my girlfriend would probably kill me if we didn't... I thought they were alright, my enjoyment was severely dulled by fan theories and confirmed hidden meanings though, the whole child prostitution thing with Spirited Away creeped me out. Definitely seem like more meaningful movies than the old Disney ones though never much cared for them but I feel watching these movies I'll never be able to turn my brain off. |

I knew of this person since like a very long time ago, and some of the movies. I just haven't seen any. Which one do you recommend anyone watching first? |

Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, or Nausicaa are probably the easiest jumping in points |

My Rankings Classics. Classics everywhere. For whatever reason Nausicaa is the one that's slightly stuck it's head in front of Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky as my favourite of the Miyazaki films. Really though - I absolutely loved the top three, and I could see why Spirited Away was so critically acclaimed as well. There's a few I haven't seen: Ponyo Porco Rosso The Wind Rises Howl's Moving Castle If you want to extend it to Studio Ghibli. There's also Grave of the Fireflies (which is brutal but fantastic) and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (which I haven't seen). Whisper of the Heart was pretty average. I'm down for a rewatch of the others or at least to get through the rest I haven't seen. |

I have seen every movie on that list except The Wind Rises. I really need to get around to seeing that movie. My favorites are 1.) Princess Mononoke 2.) Spirited Away 3.) Howl's Moving Castle 4.) Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Really need to watch this again. Have only seen it once and that was a long time ago) 5.) Kiki's Delivery Service/My Neighbor Totoro I remember the first time I watched Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I was on a vacation with my family when I was really young, maybe 8 or 9, and my uncle brought the movies and wanted us to watch them. I have loved the movies ever since! Glad some people jumped in!
I was Team Mononoke for like a decade but after I rewatched Nausicaa a a few years back, it became my favorite. Nausicaa is just such an awesome character. One of my favorite characters of all time. Miyazaki just knows how to create strong female characters better than most writer/directors. People prasing George Miller for Furiosa in Fury Road (rightfully so) and I'm sitting over here like "Miyazaki has been doing this for decades!".
I remember buying Princess Mononoke on VHS on whim when I was a kid. Had never seen any anime besides DBZ really and choose it strictly on the boxart. One of the best decisions I ever made in my life haha Anyone interested in doing a group rewatch? I would be down with rewatching any of them (if not all). Would be fun to discuss and analyze them in a group setting. Edited by Noir, Jul 6 2015, 03:57 AM.

Awesome. Should we watch them in order of release or? The order doesn't make a difference to me. Up for anything.

Alright cool. I'm going to give people a day or two to hop on before we figure out exactly what the plan is that way no one is behind to start. |

Just the three of us then? Fine by me if you both are still interested. Assuming you are, should we just start with Nausicaa? |
